Taste Gianniotikos Baklava
Historically, Ioannina is well-known for being one of the most multicultural cities of Greece, being the main trade hub of north-west Greece for many centuries. Such a society, based on the co-existence of many different cultures, has incorporated various elements in its culinary identity. Gianniotikos (literally translates in Greek to “originating from Ioannina”) Baklava – a traditional local dessert whose origins date back to the first years of the Ottoman rule of the region – is a perfect example of this. Pistachios or almonds? Phyllo pastry or kadayif pastry? With Gianniotikos Baklava, you don’t have to choose one over the other, as they all co-exist in harmony, carefully rolled in “klostaria” (long pastry rolls) to make sure it is baked to perfection and the sweet syrup is absorbed evenly, while remaining delicious and crispy.
Gianniotikos baklava can be found at almost every patisserie of the city and we strongly recommend you to try this unique sweet delicacy.
